HORTUS MUSICUS. VIDUSJŪRAS MOZAĪKA

This programme takes you into the splendid and colourful world of the music from the countries around the Mediterranean Sea. 

Although there were no such quick means of transport and communication these days as we possess today, music was a really international phenomenon. Composers and musicians travelled a lot, most popular tunes spread from country to country and across the seas. Italy dominated and set the mode and fashion in music in Europe for centuries. France and Spain had flourishing and rich music life of their own. Many Spanish and Portuguese musicians followed Columbus to the new world, and dominated there.

For many years already has Hortus Musicus has not limited itself to performing only European early music. Borders are crossed geographically, chronologically and across different genres. In addition to the so called classical early music the ensemble’s programmes include contemporary, jazz, traditional and folk music from exotic countries. In spite of certain dissimilarities, which tend to affect our attitude towards the Arabic world, mutual relations have been more fruitful than we can guess. Through Spain and the crusades, the South and the East have influenced our whole culture, including music. Several music instruments came to Europe following this path, which is why music from the countries from the Southern and Eastern banks of the Mediterranean Sea sounds extremely natural on early instruments.
